Finanzierung [Bearbeiten]

This marked the first time that Hamas formally accused Egypt of using poison gas. Until now, Hamas complained that Egyptian security forces were flooding the tunnels with water in what resulted in the death and injury of several Palestinian workers.

Abu Zuhri said about 40 Palestinian workers have been killed by the Egyptian gas pumped in the tunnels. He said Egypt has also flooded the tunnels with raw sewage, which also proved lethal.

"We demand an investigation into the incident, and for those responsible to be brought to justice," Abu Zuhri told a briefing on April 29.

Hamas said the Health Ministry examined the substance used in the Egyptian destruction of the four tunnels. Officials said the four Palestinians died of suffocation.

Ok, we still have this problem: how did he get his legs stretched into this relaxed cosy position reminding us of Winnetou pt3, when Old Shatterhand crosses the hands of his dead buddy (does he?) and we all start crying, because it is sooo sad.

As Israel began releasing the prisoners, the Times' legion of reporters failed to interview a single flotilla member to get their version of the atrocity.

The May 31 Times reported "Israeli officials said that international law allows for the capture of naval vessels in international waters#" Israeli officials said. Exactly. With convenient unprofessionalism, the Times published Israel's claim at face value, offering no comment or analysis by experts in international law. In fact (and as the Times must have known), independent experts call the attack "flagrantly illegal."

When the Times finally did report something not fed to them by Israel, their front page story lamented the public relations catastrophe for Israel, not the murder of nine peace activists nor the immense suffering caused by the illegal siege of Gaza.

On the contrary, Times reporter Isabel Kershner writes, "Israel says it allows enough basic supplies through crossings to prevent an acute humanitarian crisis." Again, the paper reported this cruel lie citing only Israeli propaganda as their source ("Israel says#"). No editor of the NY Times would allow such sloppy journalism - unless directed to do so by top management.

The NY Times has a long history of pro-Israel reporting of events in the Middle East. One notable illustration is their coverage of Israel's 1967 attack on the USS Liberty that killed and wounded over 200 American sailors. The Times' only account of this deliberate, hour-long assault on a U.S. ship - a brief summary buried on page 19 of the paper.

The question is who within the New York Times ordered the most recent journalistic stonewalling and submission to Israeli interests. Might it be publisher/owner Arthur Sulzberger, Jr.? Rank-and-file employees and journalists at the Times must be truly embarrassed, even shamed by their employer's willful deception of American readers.

International network for the Palestinian popular nonviolent resistance

Israeli repression of Palestinian non-violent resistance against the Wall and the Occupation takes a distubring turn: Adeeb Abu Rahma, from Bil'in Village, sentenced to two years' imprisonment.

On 30 June 2010, grassroots activist Adeeb Abu Rahma, member of the Bil'in Popular Committee against the Wall and Settlements, was sentenced by Israeli military court to two years' imprisonment, after being arrested on 10 July 2009 during a weekly demonstration in Bil'in, and after spending 11 months of detention in the Ofer military complex in the Occupied Territories.

Adeeb Abu Rahma is a taxi-driver and he has 11 children, he's well known for his generosity and constant presence at village of Bil'in's weekly demonstrations against Israel's wall and for his commitment to popular nonviolent resistance, and the sentence is part of Israeli strategy to repress and criminalize popular nonviolent struggle against the Occupation and the Wall.

The sentence that condemned Adeeb states that he is guilty of "encourage violence", "activity against public order" and of being "present in a closed military area", as Bil'in has been declared every Friday from 8am to 8pm, in order to prevent the weekly demonstration. Adeeb lives in the village, and always has; so he has been convicted of being present in his own home.

Adeeb's case relied on the forced confessions of four Bil'in youth - 14, 15 and 16 years old - arrested during a night raid by Israeli soldiers and forced to state that Adeeb told them to throw stones at the soldiers.

Adeeb Abu Rahma's arrest is just the latest in a series of repressive measures implemented by Israel in order to stop the popular nonviolent resistance of Palestinians, Israelis and Internationals. Palestinian protestors are targeted by mass arrests, night raids and criminalization of the members of the Popular Committee members who lead the protests.

For the past five years the people from Bil'in have waged an ongoing struggle against the Israeli wall and the Occupation. Other villages such as Nil'in, Al-Ma'asara, Budrus, Jayyus, An-Nabi Saleh, Iraq Burin and Al-Wallaja have joined this struggle.

According to data provided by Addameer and Stop the Wall, more than 1,566 Palestinians have been injuried and 16 have been killed between 2005 and 2009 during nonviolent demonstration in the Occupied Territories. Since 2002, in the villages of Bilin, Nilin, Al-Ma'asara, and Budrus, 176 Palestinian citizens have been arrested.

Today more than ever, it is necessary to campaign for the release of more than 7,000 Palestinian political prisoners, among which more than 300 are minors.

Though from a simple family, Raja has won extremely high marks in the nationwide high-school exam scores, and she is now studying medicine at Bir Zeit University. Adeeb drives a taxi, and fees and other expenses would never have been easy for him, but his beloved daughter's education has always been his priority. Ali Abdussalam Treki, president of the UN General Assembly, sent a letter to the members of the General Assembly to inform them that the debate would not occur.

Malaysia had asked, with support from Iran and Syria, for an emergency session to be held by the UN General Assembly to discuss the May 31 commando raid. "

These nine men were husbands and fathers, an American student who wanted to become a doctor, a fireman who came to help on board the Mavi Marmara, a photojournalist shot through the middle of the forehead as he tried to photograph Israel's assault on a civilian ship in international waters in the dark.

No matter what spin Israel sends out or its slick talking heads who try to justify murder and mayhem, it is important to remember that none of these men were armed with guns, sound bombs or tear gas. No Israeli soldier was shot... as members on board the Mavi Marmara tried to defend themselves... something every one of us would have done if our family, friends, ship or home was attacked by masked armed intruders.

No Israeli soldier was killed. The few who were injured were treated by Turkish doctors, then sent back to their unit.

The terrorists on board that ship as well as the other five ships, (where passengers were beaten, tied up, tear gassed and wounded), worked for the Israeli navy.

Yesterday, an Israeli military inquiry committee published a report about Israel's raid on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. While criticising "mistakes" made by the Israeli navy, such as its failure to coordinate with the Mossad before the raid and to properly plan the raid, the report is essentially a whitewash. Aside from these criticisms, it commends the raid. It does not hold the Israeli commandos involved culpable in any way for the deaths of nine people on board the Mavi Marmara, instead praising them for showing courage in their confrontation with unarmed activists, which it portrays as terrorists. This report suggests that Israel has learned no lessons from its murderous raid. Its image across the world has taken a battering and if it thought that it could deter any further aid convoys it was sorely mistaken.

Following the raid on the flotilla, new aid convoys are being planned. The European Campaign to End the Siege of Gaza is now organising a "Freedom Flotilla 2", which will set sail for Gaza in August. It will consist of more ships than the first one and carry 4,000 activists. An aid ship from Lebanon is on its way to Gaza via Cyprus. A Libyan aid ship, the Amalthea, organised by the Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation and carrying one of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's sons is due to reach Gaza today but is been surrounded and forcibly diverted by the Israeli navy toward Egypt. In addition to the ships, there have been overland convoys. An Algerian aid convoy and a convoy organised by Egyptian opposition MPs entered Gaza through the Rafah border crossing last month, but they were forced by the Egyptian authorities to leave their aid behind. A Jordanian overland convoy also began its journey to Gaza yesterday 14 July.

These aid missions have a very low chance of success. Those attempting to reach Gaza by sea are exposing themselves to great danger, as the Israeli government has shown that it is not averse to killing unarmed activists. Overland convoys trying to reach Gaza through the Rafah crossing almost invariably have their aid confiscated by the Egyptian authorities. The convoys to Gaza appear to be on a perilous and futile mission. Why then, do the activists of the European Campaign to End the Siege of Gaza, the Free Gaza Movement, and the Turkish humanitarian group IHH, which has been so much maligned in the media, persist in their efforts to send aid to Gaza? The reason is that this is the only way to end the siege of Gaza. The European Union, the United States and the Arab countries, are all collaborating with the Israelis in the siege of Gaza, and while they are prepared to make occasional statements criticising it, they are not prepared to exert even the smallest amount of pressure on Israel to end the siege. When global public opinion turned against Israel after its raid on the flotilla, the U.N. Security Council refused to condemn the raid under U.S. pressure and the U.S. vice president, Joe Biden, defended Israel's actions. In order to placate world opinion, Israel announced that it would "ease" the blockade on Gaza. However this "easing" will have little effect on the lives of ordinary people in Gaza. Exports remain prohibited, crippling Gaza's economy. The import of building materials is still banned, ensuring that the damage done by Israel's war against Gaza - which destroyed 39% of Gaza's houses - goes unrepaired and that thousands of people remain homeless.

Israel's three year siege of Gaza has devastated that territory. 52% of children suffer from malnutrition. The water supply system has collapsed. 80% of the population live in poverty. However, the international community has shown that it is willing to tolerate this and with Israel's announcement of the "easing" of the blockade, international pressure on Israel has also eased. The United States and the European Union are willing to allow Israel to get away with meaningless gestures which will do nothing to alleviate the plight of the people of Gaza. However, the aid convoys will continue to keep the siege of Gaza in the global spotlight and keep up the pressure on Israel and the international community to lift the siege. Israel's image across the world is now in tatters thanks to the raid on the flotilla. The Boycott, Disinvestment and Sanctions campaign is gaining momentum, particularly on the cultural level with actors and musicians cancelling concerts and appearances in Israel. With their perseverance and determination, the convoys will be able to make Israel's siege of Gaza unsustainable.

Palestinians unite on housing rights

The al-Rajabi family of the Beit Hanina neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem were made homeless on Tuesday, 13 July, after Israeli demolition vehicles razed their home to the ground. Five other homes and structures were destroyed earlier in the day in the Issawiya and Jabal al-Mukabber neighborhoods, also in East Jerusalem.

Speaking to Sherine Tadros of Al-Jazeera English following the demolition, Linda al-Rajabi, mother of five children, said that Israeli police ordered her family to immediately evacuate their home and remove all of their belongings from inside. "They demolished the house without giving a warning or anything," al-Rajabi told Tadros. "[The Israelis] can build 600 settlements, and I am in a shack ... and they demolished it" ("Israel destroys Palestinian homes," 13 July 2010 [video]).

Israeli officials ordered the demolition of the al-Rajabi home because it was "built without permits," a long-standing policy of justification of home demolitions. In a statement, the Israeli government said the homes were "illegally built and uninhabited." Through a court order, the buildings were destroyed.

The al-Rajabi home was rebuilt a second time last year after Israeli bulldozers destroyed the first home in 2008. With assistance from local nongovernmental organizations, including the Israeli Committee Against Home Demolitions (ICAHD), the home had been reconstructed as the family worked with an attorney to obtain legal building permits -- to no avail.

"The Jerusalem municipality demolished six houses in East Jerusalem claiming they were built illegally, ignoring the fact that the municipality makes it impossible for Palestinians to obtain permits in order to build legally," ICAHD stated in a press release. "These demolitions come after an unofficial six-month halt to home demolitions in East Jerusalem, although within that period several uninhabited Palestinian-owned structures were nevertheless demolished. The suspension of demolitions came as a result of pressure from the international community, particularly from the US administration which has repeatedly criticized the practice" ("Jerusalem Municipality demolishes 6 houses across East Jerusalem," 14 July 2010).

The US State Department, upon hearing that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government demolished the homes in East Jerusalem, urged "all parties to avoid actions that could undermine trust." State Department spokesman Philip Crowley added that the US was "concerned" about Tuesday's demolitions.

These demolitions come on the heels of Monday's decision by the Jerusalem municipal committee to pre-approve 32 new Jewish-only apartment units in the illegal Pisgat Zeev settlement in occupied East Jerusalem. Pisgat Zeev abuts the Beit Hanina neighborhood.

ICAHD added in its statement that Netanyahu's government has declared new "building plans for East Jerusalem settlements," solidifying this plan with the resumption of home demolitions. "Both actions are a clear declaration that the Government of Israel is not interested in good faith negotiations. Instead, the government and settlers continue creating facts on the ground intended to Judaize East Jerusalem and strengthen Israeli sovereignty over it, thereby preventing the possibility for a future division of the city in which East Jerusalem could form the capital of a Palestinian State," ICAHD reported.

Meanwhile, about 35 kilometers west of occupied East Jerusalem, also on Tuesday, hundreds of Palestinian, Israeli and international activists led a demonstration through the city of Ramle near Tel Aviv to protest the planned demolition of 13 homes in the Dhammash village, sandwiched between Ramle and Lydd. For months, the Palestinian residents of Dhammash have been living in constant threat of losing their homes in their village, which has been "unrecognized" by the State of Israel since 1948. Residents of Dhammash are Israeli citizens and pay taxes, but do not receive any services as the state refuses to acknowledge their presence.

The residents were able to petition the court several months ago to suspend the demolition orders while they attempted to pressure the government into officially recognizing the village, which would finally grant the village municipal services and basic infrastructure.

But that court order expired this week, and Israeli officials stated that the homes would be demolished because they still lacked the proper building permits. As the entire village is officially "unrecognized," the government has classified the homes as "illegal," thereby exposing them to imminent demolition. Dhammash residents told The Electronic Intifada in March that the municipality plans to construct Jewish-only condominium complexes on the village's land.

The Petach Tikva municipal court is currently holding hearings on whether or not to go ahead with the government's plan to raze the homes in Dhammash. Approximately 600 persons currently live in 70 houses in the village.

Tuesday's demonstration culminated in a plan to protest outside the courthouse on Wednesday. Internationally-renowned hip hop group DAM set up a flatbed truck in the middle of the village and performed for the crowd. DAM's members, all from the neighboring city of Lydd, have helped to organize a weeks-long summer camp in Dhammash -- for local and international children and adults -- to bring attention to the critical situation in the village and to build widespread solidarity.

On Wednesday, 14 July, following the demonstration in Ramle, the municipal court decided to once again freeze the demolition orders for three months and to resume court hearings in October. Members of the local popular committees stated in a press release that they believe the decision to suspend the demolitions was a direct result of expanded and successful community organizing and growing media attention focused on Dhammash. Attorneys for Dhammash residents are also planning to appeal the demolition orders entirely before the court hearings resume in October.

Several weeks ago, residents from the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah -- where violent takeovers of Palestinian homes by Jewish settlers have been ongoing but met with sustained protest -- joined dozens of activists and came to Dhammash to show unity in struggle. In turn, Dhammash villagers have been active in the regular protests in Sheikh Jarrah. "

In the recent Gaza operations, Israeli forces frequently airburst white phosphorus in 155mm artillery shells in and near populated areas. Each airburst shell spreads 116 burning white phosphorus wedges in a radius extending up to 125 meters from the blast point. White phosphorus ignites and burns on contact with oxygen, and continues burning at up to 1500 degrees Fahrenheit (816 degrees Celsius) until nothing is left or the oxygen supply is cut. When white phosphorus comes into contact with skin it creates intense and persistent burns that continue to ignite.
On January 15, several white phosphorus shells fired by the Israeli military hit the headquarters of the UN Relief and Works Agency in Gaza City, destroying medicine, food and other basic aid. Hat Taysir Hayb sich selber in dem gazischen Jungen wiedererkannt, sich hier hineinübertragen und wollte Taysir Hayb sich selber vor Perez, Barak und König Saul beschützen? Wen hat Taysir Hayb seiner eigenen Ansicht nach erschossen, wer ist "THE PERSON", worin bestand der "MISTAKE"? Wen wollte Taysir Hayb warum ermorden und wie wurde das von den in seinem Umfeld sozialisierten mitbetroffenen Ermittlern und Richtern erkannt und bewertet?

Sehen Sie sich die Palästinenser in Ost-Jerusalem an, die sind sich gar nicht darüber im Klaren, dass sie KZ-Sklaven sind, weil sie von Geburt an so aufgewachsen sind und nichts anderes kennen. A Palestinian man has been convicted of rape after having consensual sex with a woman who had believed him to be a fellow Jew.

Sabbar Kashur, 30, was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Monday after the court ruled that he was guilty of rape by deception. According to the complaint filed by the woman with the Jerusalem district court, the two met in downtown Jerusalem in September 2008 where Kashur, an Arab from East Jerusalem, introduced himself as a Jewish bachelor seeking a serious relationship. The two then had consensual sex in a nearby building before Kashur left.

When she later found out that he was not Jewish but an Arab, she filed a criminal complaint for rape and indecent assault.

Although Kashur was initially charged with rape and indecent assault, this was changed to a charge of rape by deception as part of a plea bargain arrangement.

Handing down the verdict, Tzvi Segal, one of three judges on the case, acknowledged that sex had been consensual but said that although not "a classical rape by force," the woman would not have consented if she had not believed Kashur was Jewish.

The sex therefore was obtained under false pretences, the judges said. "If she hadn't thought the accused was a Jewish bachelor interested in a serious romantic relationship, she would not have cooperated," they added.

The court ruled that Kashur should receive a jail term and rejected the option of a six-month community service order. He was said to be seeking to appeal.

Segal said: "The court is obliged to protect the public interest from sophisticated, smooth-tongued criminals who can deceive innocent victims at an unbearable price - the sanctity of their bodies and souls. When the very basis of trust between human beings drops, especially when the matters at hand are so intimate, sensitive and fateful, the court is required to stand firmly at the side of the victims - actual and potential - to protect their wellbeing. Otherwise, they will be used, manipulated and misled, while paying only a tolerable and symbolic price."

Gideon Levy, a liberal Israeli commentator, was quoted as saying: "I would like to raise only one question with the judge. What if this guy had been a Jew who pretended to be a Muslim and had sex with a Muslim woman?

"Would he have been convicted of rape? The answer is: of course not."

Arabs constitute about 20% of Israel's population, but relationships between Jews and Arabs are rare. There are few mixed neighbourhoods or towns, and Arabs suffer routine discrimination.

Israeli MPs are considering a law requiring prospective Israeli citizens to declare loyalty to Israel as a "Jewish, democratic state". Many Arabs would balk at swearing allegiance to a state which they see as explicitly excluding or marginalising them.

Dan Meridor, a deputy prime minister in Binyamin Netanyahu's government, is opposed to the proposal. "Why does every bill need the word 'Jewish' in it - to show the Arab citizens that it doesn't belong to them? Then we're all shocked when they radicalise their stance.

"The majority doesn't need to remind the minority that it is in fact a minority all the time," he added.

"She came in through and it wasn't clear she was injured. Suddenly a lot of blood came from her nose and she vomited. All of the family saw this - her little brothers were very scared. She had just been playing in the front of the house."

This is a mother describing to us her daughter, 9-year-old Sammah as she came in to her home at 4pm after the Israeli army reportedly shelled and fired four bombs into and around a residential area in Beit Hanoun, Northern Gaza. She is now in a semi-critical condition in hospital, suffering extensive blood loss and very low haemoglobin. She was hit by shrapnel and `flechettes' from a nail bomb that landed 100m away, causing internal bleeding to the chest, severe head trauma and nails embedded in her body. Shells containing flechettes are illegal under international law if fired into densely populated civilian areas and SamahEid El-Massry is one of four children injured in the attack yesterday, July 21st.

Two young men were killed: Mohammad Al-Kafarneh, 23, from severe shrapnel injuries in his back and chest and Kasim Al-Shinbary, 19, caused by injuries from nails embedded in his skull and shrapnel wounds to the back. It was unclear earlier whether they were resistance fighters or if they were civilians - the Israeli Occupation Force called them `militants' - just as they called the four children, aged between 4 and 11, who were left hospitalised by their injuries `militants'. Their parents could be found weeping over their loved ones in Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City last night.

We first visited Haitham Thaer Qasem a four year old boy and a first and only child. He was sleeping on the hospital bed, occasionally gasping for breath through the strapping around his nose. He had suffered deep nasal trauma, and flechette darts from the nail bomb were still embedded in his tiny body, where they had pierced his back, right elbow and right leg. He was 200m from the impact of the bomb.

In his hospital ward his mother was standing to one side crying quietly and another relative at Haitham's bedside explained what had happened.

"We had asked Haitham to get shopping for her from the market#then we heard the bombings and somebody came to our home and told our family that he was in the hospital and was injured in the bombing. We came quickly to the hospital." /

In a nearby ward we then visited 9-year-old Sammah Eid El-Massry who was in a worse state. The doctor told us she was in a `semi-critical' condition with severe chest, head and abdominal pain. Her blood-loss was a major concern, arriving at the hospital with 7.5 haemoglobin levels, 4-6 below the normal levels, the problem exacerbated by the fact that she, like three of her brothers, already suffered from a blood condition known as Thalassemia for which the drug Exjade is in extremely short supply due to the Israeli blockade. She was clearly in pain and confused, trying to remove the nasal tubes. Her mother showed us the bandages on her chest.

"She was in a very bad condition when she arrived - it's difficult for children and very traumatic to insert a chest tube. Very painful. Blood was mainly coming from the chest. We will have to perform surgery and we will further explore her abdominal pain", the doctor tells us.

This is not the first time the family was attacked, Sammah's 4-year-old brother Ryad Eid El-Massry was injured during Operation Cast Lead, the three week Israeli assault over the New Year of 2009 period, during which over 400 Palestinian children were killed.

"Our house was hit during the war, a neighbour sheltering inside was killed and our son suffered severe head injuries. He wasn't able to access the care he needed and because of this his sight is now permanently damaged."

As we left Sammah, she had begun to cry, moaning in serious discomfort and confusion. There were two more injured children in the hospital following the attack: Azzam Mohammed El-Massry (aged 11) has a severely fractured left elbow and Ebrahim Wasseem El-Massry (aged 4) has light injuries to his abdomen.

/It's not just the siege. Criminal Israeli violence continues unabated, resulting in Palestinians in Gaza - children like Sammah, Haitham, Azzam and Ebrahim - and their families experiencing horrific pain and suffering. Last week it was the Abu Said family, attacked in their home on the border East of Gaza city; they lost Nema, a 33-year-old mother of five as she went outside to look frantically for her youngest son. Three more family members were also injured, again by the thousands of `flechette' darts unleashed by the nail bomb assault. Many of these darts will remain permanently embedded in their bodies.

Palestinians remain incredulous to the idea of justice. They will remain so as long as they're allowed to be dismissed as footnotes by those supporting, or blindly ignoring, what has happened to them and is being done to them. But those who meet them like we did yesterday will never forget what they go through. And people of conscience around the world are beginning to open their eyes instead of turning their backs and acting against these ongoing atrocities.

TROY, New York - The Dogans were a quiet family little noticed by their neighbors here in upstate New York. Ahmet Dogan had come to the area from Turkey to study accounting at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

He was a serious student; the Dogans did little entertaining. But when their younger son, Furkan, was born in 1991, the family threw a party and a neighbor recalled a toast "to the first U.S. citizen in the family."

Furkan Dogan would live just two years in Troy, returning to Turkey with his family in 1993. But he was proud of his American passport and dreamt of coming back after completing medical school. Five Israeli bullets - at least two of them to the head - ended that dream on May 31. Dogan was 19.

The young American, who had just completed high school with excellent grades in the central Turkish town of Kayseri, had seen an online advertisement for volunteers to deliver aid to Gaza. The ad, from a Turkish charity called the Humanitarian Relief Foundation, or I.H.H, said the goal of the trip was to show that Israel's "embargo/blockade can be legally broken."

Little interested in politics, but with an aspiring doctor's concern for Palestinian suffering, Dogan won a lottery to go.

How he was killed is disputed - as is just about everything concerning the Israeli naval takeover of the six-boat Gaza-bound flotilla - but his father suspects a video camera carried by his son may have provoked Israeli commandos.

O.K., enough said, that's the start of the story you haven't read about the short life of Furkan Dogan, an American killed by Israeli forces in international waters on the Turkish-flagged Mavi Marmara.

In truth I have not been to Troy but I do find the effacement of Dogan since his death almost two months ago at once offensive and instructive.

I have little doubt that if the American killed on those ships had been Hedy Epstein, a St. Louis-based Holocaust survivor, or Edward Peck, a former U.S. ambassador to Mauritania, we would have heard a lot more. We would have read the kind of tick-tock reconstructions that the deaths of Americans abroad in violent and disputed circumstances tend to provoke. (Epstein had planned to be aboard the flotilla and Peck was.)

I also have little doubt that if the incident had been different - say a 19-year-old American student called Michael Sandler killed by a Palestinian gunman in the West Bank when caught in a cross-fire between Palestinians and Israelis - we would have been deluged in stories about him.

But a chill descends when you have the combination of Israeli commandos doing the firing, an American with a foreign-sounding Muslim name, and the frenzied pre-emptive arguments of Israel and those among its U.S. supporters who will brook no criticism of the Jewish state.

This chill is a bad thing. Let's do whatever it takes to find out how Dogan died - and the eight other victims. The Middle East requires more open debate and the dropping of taboos. It needs the leading institutions of American Jewry to encourage broad discussion rather than, as Peter Beinart put it in an important recent essay in The New York Review of Books, checking "their liberalism at Zionism's door."

Let's face it, without the flotilla outcry that allowed the Obama administration to question Israel's self-defeating suffocation of Gaza, Israel would still be imposing the blockade that handed Hamas control of whatever was left of the Gaza economy. Now that blockade has been eased.

As this suggests, Israel will, ostrich-like, push policies born of the security mantra way beyond their rationale, only changing course when its critical friends raise their voices. It's time for the U.S. Jewish establishment to think again - and think openly - or risk losing the many younger Jews troubled by Israel's course.

I hope every member of Congress read Beinart's piece. I contacted the office of Congressman Paul Tonko, who represents the Troy area, to ask about Dogan. A spokesman, Beau Duffy, wrote saying that "There really isn't much of a local connection here" and that Tonko had no comment. Hardly a surprise: Nobody in Congress has had anything to say about this American death.

I called the State Department, where an official said the U.S. ambassador in Turkey has offered the Dogan family assistance. (He also denied reports that the United States plans to designate I.H.H. a terrorist organization.)

Any further action, including a possible F.B.I. investigation of Dogan's death, will hinge on the results of the inquiry being led by a retired Israeli Supreme Court justice and including two foreign observers. The Dogan family could also request F.B.I. action.

But it seems they have few illusions. Professor Dogan, who teaches at Kayseri University, told the Wall Street Journal's Marc Champion (who wrote the best piece on Dogan) that he's been wondering what the U.S. response would have been if his son had been a Christian living stateside. Having lived in America, he said, "I know what people do there when a cat gets stuck in a tree."

It's different, however, when an American Muslim male gets stuck in a hail of Israeli gunfire.
